741 people died of influenza in Wellington in late 1918 and early 1919. 667 of them were buried at Karori Cemetery. Included in this number are 6 people who died of influenza and were buried in the Jewish section, and 108 soldiers who were buried in the newly developed Services section.(see below).
There are three main areas at Karori Cemetery - Anglican, Catholic, and Public2 – where those who died from influenza were buried. Many of their plots have been progressively cleaned and tidied by the Project team, and research about those who died has resulted in more than 170 of their stories being uploaded to this website.
109 soldiers were interred in the Services section of Karori Cemetery during November and December 1918. 108 of them died of influenza, many of them while resident at the Training Unit at Trentham Military Camp, Upper Hutt. Some men had served overseas and had been repatriated as no longer fit for active service, but had been redeployed to undertake various roles at Trentham. Most though had recently been balloted and were preparing to be sent to the Front. Their headstones and the general environs are well-maintained and orderly.
108 soldiers names are listed towards the end of this page.
74 people who died of influenza in Wellington were buried in other locations – the burial locations of 43 of these people are unknown; 7 were buried in the Bolton Street Cemetery; 21 staff and inmates of the Porirua Mental Asylum were buried in Porirua Cemetery; 2 in the churchyard at St. John’s church, Johnsonville; and 1 person from Wellington was buried at Taita Cemetery.
2 people were cremated at Karori and their ashes removed.
