Winifred COLLYER was born on 9 February 1890 in Wellington, the second daughter of Albert Silvanus Collyer and Jane Anne MARTIN.
Her father was born in Middlesex, England, and emigrated to New Zealand with his parents and siblings in 1874. His wife was born in 1863 in Wellington.
Their marriage notice in the Evening Post of 6 May 1886, recorded: “Collyer-Martin – On 27th April, at the residence of the bride’s father, Opaki, Masterton, Albert Silvanus, second son of Mr George Collyer, of Wellington, to Jane Anne, second daughter of Mr Albert Martin, Forest Home, Opaki”
Winifred had four sisters and a brother. A number of her siblings and their families are buried in Karori Cemetery.
The 1897 – 1900 Wellington School Inspector Returns show that Winnie Collyer attended Newtown School, along with her siblings.
On 30 December 1915 she married William BINET BROWN (known as Binet Brown) in Wellington. He was born in Australia in 1890; his birth registered in Lambton, New South Wales. His parents were William and Ellen BROWN. Before his marriage, Binet Brown lived with his parents at 178 Adelaide Road.
The New Zealand Army World War 1 Reserve Rolls of 1916-1917 show that Binet Brown was a schoolmaster living at 3 Hiropi Street, Newtown, Wellington. Binet and Winifred did not appear to have had any children.
In 1918 Winifred became unwell with influenza and died at their Hiropi Street, Newtown home on 18 November. She was buried in the public section of Karori Cemetery on 19 November 1918. The plot was purchased by her husband on 19 March 1919.
The death notice in the Evening Post on 19 November 1918 said:
“Brown – On the 18th November, 1918, at her residence, 3 Hiropi-street, Winifred, beloved wife of William Binet Brown, and second daughter of A S Collyer, of Masterton. In her 29th year.”
Binet Brown’s parents were buried in the plot with Winifred in 1926, and in 1933.
The headstone reads:
In Loving Memory of Winifred Brown, beloved wife of William Binet Brown who went to her home on 18 November 1918, aged 28 years. “Sometime we’ll understand”
Ellen Blake Brown, beloved wife of William A Brown, passed away 3rd October 1926, aged 62 years. “Sadly Missed”
Also William Alfred (Dad) husband of above, died 29 October 1933, aged 69 years.
Winifred’s husband Binet Brown remarried in 1920, and had two children with his second wife.
