Florence was born on 18 July 1886 in Wellington, daughter of Mary Theresa BYRNE. Mary was born in Dublin in 1864 and arrived in New Zealand before 1886. Mary’s parents were Peter Byrne and Ellen RICHARDSON.
Mary married George Henry YATES (YEATES) in Wellington on 17 October 1887 at St Peter’s Anglican Church. George was from England, and had been born in Deptford in 1853, the son of George YEATES and Ruth CHATFIELD.
Mary and George went on to have nine children, as well as Florence. They were Edith Alice (b1888), Mabel Gertrude b1890, Peter Joseph b1890, George Henry Huia b1892, Albert Edward Victor b1893, Winifred Beatrice May b1894, Ruth Maude May b1896, Kirkland William Bell b1898 and Ronald Percival b1900. All were born in Wellington.
George and Albert moved to Sydney in later years. In Karori Cemetery, the family plot (104 W) is in the Roman Catholic section. Mary and George are buried there, along with daughter Ruth Silcock, granddaughter Marcia Silcock, daughter Mabel Heileson, and sons Ronald Percival and Kirkland William.
Florence, who died in 1918, is in a separate grave nearby.
Florence married Hubert Francis BUCKINGHAM on 19 September 1910 in the Registrar’s Office, Wellington. Hubert, from Australia, was born in 1881 in Sydney, son of George Nathaniel Buckingham and Emma CURTIS. His sister Alice Maude was born in 1876.
In 1911 Florence and Hubert were living at 27 Constable Street, Berhampore, Wellington. Hubert’s occupation was listed as a glass cutter. Their son, Dawson Peter, was born in March 1911. By the time of the 1914 Electoral Roll, the family had moved to 437 Adelaide Road, Wellington South to live with Florence’s parents.
In 1918 Florence became unwell with influenza and died on 20 November. She was buried in Karori Cemetery on 21 November. The Evening Post published the following death notices on 20 November:
BUCKINGHAM - On the 20th November, 1918, at her parents' residence, 437, Adelaide-road, Berhampore, Florence Philomela, dearly beloved wife of Hubert Buckingham; aged 32 years. Sadly missed, deeply mourned.

The Evening Post published a further notice on 23 November 1918:

YATES, Adelaide-road, Berhampore, tender their Sincere and Heartfelt Thanks to the many kind friends for messages of sympathy and floral tributes received during their recent sad bereavement. Special thanks are accorded to Dr. McEvedy, Sisters of Compassion, Nurse Hall-Kenny, Mr and Miss Fegan, and the firm of Messrs. Smith and Smith and employees.
From 1919 until 1924, lengthy In Memoriam notices were published by many members of her extended family.
Hubert got married again in 1922, to Edith ARCHER and they lived in Lyall Bay. He was an active member of the Lyall Bay Bowling Club. He died on 18 April 1926 and was cremated at Karori Cemetery on 20 April. The Evening Post of 19 April published the following notice:
BUCKINGHAM - On the I8th April, 1926, Hubert Francis (Teddy), dearly loved husband of Edith Buckingham, of 105, Apu crescent, Lyall Bay; aged 43 years. Deeply regretted.
The Evening Post of 30 April published a Bereavement Notice:
Mrs Edith Buckingham & Dawson wish to convey their sincere thanks to the Sister and Nurses of No 3 Ward, Wellington Hospital, also Mr Blake and boys of Standard VI South Wellington School, for their kindness during their recent sad bereavement.
