JACKSON, WILLIAM JOSEPH
Born 1877; died 25 November 1918; buried 27 November 1918; age 40
William Joseph JACKSON Jnr was born in late 1877 in the Barton Regis Registration District of Gloucestershire, son of William Joseph JACKSON and Emily HOLMAN (nee COUNSELL). William Jnr was baptised on 12 January 1879 in St Philip and Jacob Church, Bristol, Gloucestershire.
The other children born to William Snr and Emily were Henry William Innis (b: 1874); Lilian Rose (b: 1876); and Thomas Gilbert Innes (b: 1881). In the 1891 England Census the family were living at Ranelagh Street, Bristol with William Joseph Snr listed as an iron moulder. Emily died in 1899 with William Joseph Snr remarrying on 11 January 1900 in Gloucestershire to Bessie RADFORD (nee BRICE). The family stayed in the Gloucestershire area.
In 1898 William Joseph Jnr and Clara KITSON were married in Bristol, Gloucestershire, England. Clara, daughter of Ralph and Susannah Kitson, was baptised on 21 October 1877 in St George’s Church, Bristol.
In the 1901 England Census William Joseph Jnr, Clara and their daughter Florence Emily were living in St Marks Lane, Eastbourn Road, Bristol, Gloucestershire, with William being listed as a locomotive engine driller.
Florence was born late in 1898 in Gloucestershire (in 1919 she married William SMITH in New Zealand. She died on 5 January 1955 and was buried in Karori Cemetery on 7 January 1955.)
A son, William Edward Jackson, was born in 1903 in Gloucestershire. (He later married Mary Winefride PEARMAN in 1926 in New Zealand. William died on 17 June 1980 in Wellington and was cremated at Karori on 19 June 1980. His occupation is listed as a lithographer.)
No shipping details have been found about the Jackson family’s arrival in New Zealand. However, deaths records in the District of Wellington for the quarter dated 31 December 1918 (New Zealand Birth Deaths & Marriages printout) showed the family had been in New Zealand for 9 years, therefore their arrival would have been around 1909. The 1914 Electoral Roll for Wellington South shows the family settled at 14 Edinburgh Terrace, Wellington. William’s occupation was listed as a fitter.
On 20 July 1915 the family welcomed the arrival of Constance Beryl. (She later married Hillary Lewis PARKER in 1941 in Christchurch. She died on 6 December 1991 and was buried on 10 December 1991 in Ruru Ruru Lawn Cemetery, Christchurch.)
The 1916-1917 New Zealand Army WWI records for the 2nd Division show William Joseph Jackson was listed as an engineer on the ship Muritai. His address was listed as 16 Derwent Street, Island Bay, Wellington.
The family moved to 16 Derwent Street between 1914 and 1918. William became sick with influenza and was moved from here to Alexander Hall Temporary Hospital in Abel Smith Street, Wellington. He died of influenza and bronchopneumonia on 25 November 1918 and was buried at Karori Cemetery on 27 November. The service was conducted by Rev Askew from the Anglican Church.
