Kathleen was born on 1 July 1898 in Wellington, fifth daughter of Catherine Elizabeth CROSSKEY and William SIMMONS. Her parents were married on 29 March 1891 and six daughters soon followed - May (b1892); Edith (b1893); Dora (b1895); Alice (b1897); Myrtle (b1900) and Kathleen.
Catherine died soon after the birth of her daughters, in October 1901, leaving a sad, young family. She was buried in Karori Cemetery on 24 October, aged 37. She had been born in 1861 in Brighton, Sussex, England and her parents were William H CROSSKEY and Catherine HARTLEY.
William was born around 1856 but it is not known where. He died in December 1926 and is buried in Karori Cemetery, in a different section from Catherine. His burial record shows his occupation as saddler and that he was 70.
School records confirm that Kathleen attended Island Bay School, starting on 6 July 1908, but that she transferred to Brooklyn School on 4 October 1909. Her last day at school was 5 November 1913, after which she assisted at home.
In the 1890 and 1896 Electoral Rolls for Wellington, William is listed at 12 Willis Street, Wellington with his occupation listed as an oyster dealer. In the 1914 Electoral Rolls for Wellington South, he was listed as living at Mills Road, Vogeltown and that he was a carpenter, and in the 1919 Electoral Roll the family was listed as living at 37 Mills Road, Vogeltown. Alice, Dora and Edith Simmons were listed as spinsters, and their father’s occupation was listed as a carpenter.
Kathleen died of influenza on 30 January 1919 at 37 Mills Road, Vogeltown, Wellington and was buried in the public section of Karori Cemetery on 2 February 1919, aged 20. She was single.
