STICK, Albert John Nicholas
Born 27 January 1895; died 24 November 1918; buried 25 November 1918; age 23
Albert was born to John Stick and Alice Clara KELLY, who were married on 18 January 1893 in New Zealand.
John’s parents Nicholas Stick and Eliza BARRON were born in Cornwall and travelled to Australia with family. They were married in Victoria, Australia in 1862 and travelled to Nelson prior to 1873. In Nelson Nicholas and Eliza lived in Collingwood Street but later moved to near Richmond. Nicholas is listed as a shopkeeper in the 1885 Electoral Roll.
Nicholas’s brother, Thomas, came to New Zealand as the Dunstan Times published the following notice on 10 January 1873 :
ANY information as to the whereabouts of THOMAS STICK, carpenter of Tywardreath, Cornwall, England, will be thankfully received by his brother Nicholas Stick, of Collingwood street. Nelson. Last heard of by letter in 1863, but reported to have been in the Dunstan Hospital, long since that time.
Very little information could be found about Alice’s family other than she was born in London, England around 1867. This information was listed on her son’s WW1 record.
John is listed as a draper, of Nelson, aged 21 in the United Grand Lodge of England Freemason Membership for 1884.
He worked as a draper’s assistant in Nelson and then had his own premises in Hardy Street. Going bankrupt in 1889, by 1890 he had moved to Wellington. From 1903 he worked for Warnock and Adkin, Drapers, Lambton Quay. This business was established early in 1885, and for eight years was conducted as Warnock, Kelly, and Adkin. The large two-storey premises contained nearly 20,000 square feet of floorage space. The business was divided into the usual departments, most of the stock being imported through the firm's buyers in London.
John and Alice welcomed their first child Mabel Alice in 1893, followed by Albert b1895; John Arthur b1897 and Hilda Florence b1901. The family lived in several homes in central Wellington before settling in Berhampore.
Albert started at Thorndon School on 29 January 1900 and left on 3 July 1903 to transfer to Berhampore School. He went on to sit the Civil Service Examination and is listed in the New Zealand Gazette on 20 January 1910. It is not known who Albert’s employer was.
Albert is listed with the 1st Division, Wellington in the New Zealand World War 1 Army Reserve Roll for 1916-1917. He was a clerk, living in Wellington South. It would appear that he did not serve in WW1 as no army records were found for him. However, his brother John, who was a clerk for Wellington Patent Slip Co, served overseas from July 1918 – July 1919 as a gunner for the New Zealand Field Artillery.
In 1918 Albert became unwell with influenza and was transferred from 20 Derwent Street, Island Bay to the Wellington College Temporary Hospital. He died on 24 November and was buried in Karori Cemetery on 25 November.
The Evening Post published a death notice on 25 November:
