SHAND, Erica Merle

Erica was born on 14 October 1915 in Wellington, second daughter of Evelyn Hilda JACOB and Frederick James SHAND. Evelyn and Frederick were married in 1912 in Wellington and their other children were Joan Evelyn (b 1913) and Maurice Frederick (b 1914).
Frederick worked for the Wellington Gas Company and in July 1915 left to enter his father’s newsagent’s business – J P Shand of Cuba Street and later Manners Street. He was presented with a case of pipes in appreciation of his services when he left the gas company. Before Frederick’s marriage, the Shand family lived at 62 Stanley Street, Berhampore, Wellington.
The family, and in particular Frederick’s father Joseph, were very involved with the community. Frederick chaired the Berhampore Kindergarten Association as they set up the new facility. His father was a lay preacher for the Berhampore Methodist Church, a councillor in the Borough of Eastbourne, and a Justice of Peace.
Erica died on 15 February 1919 at her home at 48 Stanley Street, Berhampore, Wellington and was buried in the Public section of Karori Cemetery along with her grandfather Charles JACOB, a shoemaker/bootmaker from central Wellington.
The following death notice was published in the Evening Post 17 February 1919:
Shand – on the 15th February 1919, at Wellington, Erica Merle, dearly loved daughter of Fred J and Evelyn H Shand, 48 Stanley Street, Wellington South; after a long and painful illness, following influenza complications; aged 3½ years. Deeply mourned.
The headstone on the grave reads:
In Loving Memory of Charles Samuel Jacob who died 20 Aug 1901 aged 50 yrs ‘One by one earth’s ties are broken, as we see our love decay and the hope so fondly cherished brighten but to pass away’ (Mansfield)
