Gretha Marguerite Skerry, spinster, died of influenza and pneumonia at 18 Austin Street, Mount Victoria on Christmas Day 1918 aged 28 and was buried in Karori Cemetery the following day.
She was born in Melbourne and had been in New Zealand for two years.
Her death was registered as Gretha Marguerite Skerry, although there are many variations of her name in records. Her death registration listed her father as James Skerry, a mine manager, but her mother's name was not given. Gretha’s headstone inscription shows her mother’s name was Celia.
Gretha’s death notice in the Dominion on 26 December 1918 said she was the eldest daughter of Mr and Mrs J Skerry, South Brunswick, Melbourne.
Her mother, Cecilia Pritchard, was born on 30 November 1860 in Beechworth, Victoria and died on 8 April 1936 in Fitzroy, Victoria. Her father, James Humphrey Skerry, was born in 1859 in Ballarat and died on 17 February 1922 in Brunswick, Victoria.
Gretha’s parents had married in 1888 in Ballarat and there were two other siblings, Cecilia who was born and died in 1893 in Victoria and James Humphrey, who was born in 1899 in Victoria and died there in 1971.
Gretha’s birth was registered as Marguerite Boddy Skerry in 1889 in Richmond, Victoria.
She appeared in electoral rolls in Australia in 1913 and 1914 under the name Gretha Skerry, c/o Miller and Co., Shepparton, Echuca, Victoria and in 1915 as Marguerita Skerry, 128 Nicholson St, Abbotsford, Yarra, saleswoman.
Gretha died intestate in Wellington and Letters of Administration were filed on 19 February 1919 under the name Gretha Skerry, also known as Marguerita Skerry, also known as Gretha Boddy Skerry, also known as Gretha Marguerite Skerry.
Gretha was buried in Karori Cemetery in Section CH ENG2, plot 191E. Her headstone inscription has Gretha beloved daughter of James & Celia Skerry, Melbourne died 25th December 1918 aged 28 years.
