ODDY, George
Born c1889; died 16 November 1918; buried 17 November 1918 ; age 29
The informant about George ODDY when his death was registered knew he was residing in McDonald Crescent, that he was 29 years old, and his occupation was “sailmaker”. Beyond these few scant facts we have been able to find out almost nothing about George.
McDonald Crescent runs between The Terrace and Dixon Street, so is very central to downtown Wellington. There may have been boarding houses or rooms to rent along the street, as it would have been a convenient location for access to the commercial centre and to the wharves.
According to Wikipedia “A sailmaker makes and repairs sails for sailboats, kites, hang gliders, wind art, architectural sails, or other structures using sails. A sailmaker typically works on shore in a sail loft; the sail loft has other sailmakers. Large ocean-going sailing ships often had sailmakers in the crew. The sailmaker maintained and repaired sails.”
George’s trade may have meant he worked at sea and he could have come from anywhere in the world. There are no records of his birth in New Zealand, nor of a marriage of a George Oddy.
When George became ill with the flu he was taken to the Sydney Street Temporary Hospital in Thorndon where he died on 16 November 1918. The next day he was taken to Karori Cemetery and buried in an unmarked plot in the Anglican section. Rev Woodward led the service. No notices were published in the local papers at the time of his death, and there were no family notices published in the years after 1918.
George’s plot was never paid for and he was eventually disinterred, and his remains re-interred in the small area between the row of headstones. The plot was then re-purchased but remains unmarked today.
George died intestate so Public Trust placed a notice in the Notices of Deceased Estates published in the New Zealand Gazette in July 1919.
