LINKLATER, John Henry Brooks

John was born on 13 May 1917 in Wellington, only child of Thomas Brooks Linklater and Olive Mary Caroline O’BRIEN. Olive, born in 1892 in Wellington, was the daughter of John O’Brien and Julia ASHTON. Thomas was born on 3 February 1886, also in Wellington. He was the son of Louis Brooks Linklater and Eliza Fanny PRICE.
Thomas and Olive were married on 8 November 1915 in Wellington where Thomas was working as an indent agent.
On 13 July 1917, he signed up to serve in World War 1 in the infantry. Listed as a self-employed commercial traveller, he became a corporal. The family were living at Washington Avenue, Brooklyn.
Thomas was discharged from Trentham Camp on 18 November 1918, where many were suffering from influenza.
A fortnight later their son John, who was 18 months of age, became unwell with influenza and died at home. He was buried with his grandparents in Karori Cemetery on 3 December.
A death notice in the Evening Post on 3 December 1918 said:
Linklater – On the 2nd December 1918 at Washington-avenue, Brooklyn, John Henry Brookes, infant son of Mr and Mrs Thomas Linklater; aged 18 months.
About this time Thomas and Olive moved to live with Olive’s parents at 1 Heaton Terrace, Brooklyn and they lived here until their deaths. Thomas continued to work as an indent agent and importer.
Thomas died in 1936 at Bowen Street Hospital, Wellington and was buried in the O’Brien family grave at Karori Cemetery.

OBITUARY MR. T. B. LINKLATER
There are many people, throughout New Zealand who will regret to hear of the death of Mr Thomas B. Linklater, who died in a private hospital in Wellington last Saturday, following an operation. Born in Wellington, the late Mr. Linklater who was fifty years of age, was a son of the late Mr L B Linklater, who for many years was associated with the legal firm of Bell, Gully, and Izard when its practice was carried on in Willis Street. He received his early education at the Mount Cook School and subsequently entered the softgoods business on his own account. In his early days he was a member of the St. James Football Club and he took a keen interest in all sport. He was of a genial and kindly disposition and always ready to give a helping hand to those in need of assistance. He is survived by his widow, the only daughter of Mr J O'Brien, of Wellington. His only child predeceased him eighteen years ago. The funeral took place on Monday, at the Karori Cemetery, the Rev Father Nolan officiating in the presence of a large attendance. Many beautiful wreaths and tokens of sympathy were received.
Olive died three years later. Her death was announced on 21st June 1939 in the Evening Post:
Obituary - The funeral took place on Monday of Mrs Olive M. Linklater, widow of Thos. Brooks Linklater and only daughter of Mr John O'Brien, of 1 Heaton Terrace, Brooklyn. Mrs Linklater was well beloved by a large circle of friends throughout New Zealand, and many beautiful floral tributes were received.
She was buried with her husband in the Catholic section of Karori Cemetery.
