Jessie LOGAN was born on 2 May 1888 in Wellington, third child of Louisa HOULDEY and Alexander HARRINGTON. Louisa was one of the descendants (through her mother) of the Spicer family who were early and longstanding settlers in Ohariu Valley, Johnsonville, Wellington. Alexander’s father Jeremiah, was born in Co Cork, Ireland and served with the 65th Regiment (Royal Tigers) for 16 years in Ireland, West Indies, Canada and England. He and wife Margaret arrived in the Bay of Islands on 4 January 1847. He obtained his discharge from the Regiment in 1848 and settled his family in Wellington. Alexander had 4 sisters and 6 brothers, nine of whom were born in New Zealand.
Alexander & Louisa married on 21 July 1883 at the Registrars Office, Wellington, New Zealand with Caroline Harrington and Thomas Houldey as their witnesses. They lived in Island Bay first, then moved to Brooklyn, where they lived in Reuben Avenue, Cleveland Street, and then Ohiro Road for many years. Alexander worked initially as a farm labourer and then as a carter/carrier. Jessie’s four siblings were: Ellen Amelia (b 1884); Arthur Alexander (b 1886); Amy Harriet (b 1891); and Florence Matilda (b 1892).
Jessie attended Vogeltown and Brooklyn schools before leaving to take up home duties.
On 4 January 1908 Jessie married Arthur Edward LOGAN in Wellington. Her husband was born in 1888, one of 11 children born to Emma LEWIS and Alfred LOGAN.
Her sister Amy married Victor John FARRELL in 1909.
Jessie and Arthur’s son Walter Edward was born on 20 June 1908 in Wellington. In the 1911 Electoral Roll for Wellington North the family were living at Karori Cres, Wellington, but by 1914 had moved to 45 Patanga Cres, in Thorndon. Arthur’s father and one brother were also living with them at this time.
Arthur worked as a glass silverer, coating glass surfaces with silvering solutions to make mirrors and instruments. In World War 1 Arthur is listed in the Reserve Roll for 1916 – 1917 but did not see active service.
In 1918 Jessie became unwell with influenza and was transferred to the Normal School Temporary Hospital from her home at 45 Patanga Cres.
She died here on 22 December 1918 and was buried in the public section of Karori Cemetery on 23 December 1918.
There was no death notice published in the newspapers for that day.
Six In Memoriam notices were published in the Evening Post on 22 November 1919. They were inserted by Jessie’s husband Arthur and son Walter; her sister and husband Ellen and Henry Atkinson; her sister and husband Florence and Ernest Arrowsmith; her mother and father; Lila and Ted (Eastbourne); and M Griffiths.
Arthur married again in 1920, to Ada ALLEN, but died in 1944. He was buried on 11 November 1944 in Karori Cemetery with Jessie. Arthur’s name has not been added to headstone.
Jessie and Arthur’s son Walter married Mabel Eva THORNLEY in 1936. Walter died in 1986.
Jessie’s sister Amy died of influenza on 7 January 1919. It is not known how long she had been ill. An obituary for Amy has been written separately.
