More than 730 people died of influenza in Wellington in late 1918 and early 1919, and 660 of them were buried at Karori Cemetery.
There are three main areas at Karori Cemetery - Anglican, Catholic, and Public2 – where 444 of those who died from influenza were buried. Their plots are being progressively cleaned and tidied by the Project team, and research about those who died is underway and their stories are being uploaded progressively.
A further 108 people who died of influenza were buried in pre-existing plots in the Catholic, Anglican and Public sections at Karori Cemetery, and 4 in the Jewish section. Some of these will receive attention from the Project team.
All their names (444 + 108 = 552) are listed on this page.
109 soldiers were interred during November and December 1918 in the newly formed Soldiers Section of Karori Cemetery. 106 of them died of influenza, most of them while resident at the Training Unit at Trentham Military Camp, Upper Hutt. Some men had served overseas and had been repatriated as no longer fit for active service, but had been redeployed to undertake various roles at Trentham. Most though had recently been balloted and were preparing to be sent to the Front. Their headstones and the general environs are well-maintained and orderly.
106 soldiers names are listed towards the end of this page.
71 people who died of influenza in Wellington were buried in other locations – the burial locations of 42 of these people are unknown; 7 were buried in the Bolton Street Cemetery; 19 staff and inmates of the Porirua Mental Asylum were buried in Porirua Cemetery; 3 in the churchyard at St. John’s church, Johnsonville; and 1 person from Wellington was buried at Taita Cemetery.
Two people were cremated at Karori and their ashes removed.
