“The many friends of Miss Kathleen Reyling will regret to learn that she passed away at the Normal School Hospital on Saturday last. Miss Reyling, while suffering from a severe attack of influenza, left her bed on 24th November [1918] to attend the death-bed of her sister [Nellie Wheldon], who with her husband [Private Albert Wheldon] also fell victims to the epidemic. The late Miss Reyling was well known and much loved as mistress of the Cross Creek School”

Related to Kathleen: Nellie Vaughan Wheldon (sister ; b.1893 ; d.24/11/1918 ; buried 26/11/1918; age 25) and her husband Private Albert Joseph Wheldon (d.20/11/1918 at Trentham Military Hospital ; buried 22/11/1918 ; age 28). Both are buried at Karori Cemetery.
Cross Creek School (1883-1953) was approximately 12km South of Featherston in the Wairarapa. Charles M. Blake was the head of school during Kathleen’s time as mistress. The school served families of railway workers, with Cross Creek railway station being the base of operations for the Rimutaka Incline.
Kathleen died at the Thorndon Normal School Temporary Hospital.
